A video portrait and interview with the artist and designer Karan Singh for Wertheim Village. The film opens at the entrance arch of the retail village with two visitors walking through it — the place is established before the guest speaks. An interview film depends on the subject being comfortable: the sound, the light and the camera position have to be settled before the conversation starts.
An interview film begins long before the first question. Sound, light and camera position are set before the guest enters the room — build while somebody waits and you get answers from a person who feels watched.
Showing the entrance gate first is not a courtesy to the client but dramaturgy. A conversation without a place is a face in front of a wall; with the place established first the viewer knows why this guest is sitting there.
With an artist the work comes on top. What he says has to be showable — patterns, colors, sketches, surfaces — or the film stays a conversation about something the viewer never gets to see.
