How do windows and bright areas look in the pictures?

The way the eye sees them. High dynamic range imaging does that: five frames become one picture, so windows and brightly lit areas do not burn out. HDR is selectable as an extra on the inquiry.

Do you photograph my team as well?

Yes. Pictures of staff at work take the uncertainty out of an arrival, because the guest already knows the face of the person they will be speaking to.

Is there moving footage of the rooms?

Yes, as a location trailer. It gives guests an impression of the rooms in advance — and if the house has a restaurant, the inquiry asks separately whether food pictures should come along.

What may I use the pictures for?

Website, booking portals, print, social media, or resale to third parties. The intended use is a required field on the hotel inquiry, so it is settled before the shoot.

What about the outside of the building?

That is on the exterior page: architecture by day and by night, panoramas, drone shots and — when the weather does not cooperate — replacing the sky in post.

Which properties and which region do you work in?

Most of the work happens in the Rhine-Main region — hotels and properties in Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Mainz, Darmstadt, Bad Homburg vor der Höhe or Kronberg im Taunus. Beyond that, across Germany and internationally: hotel shoots have led to Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Zurich, Dublin, Santorini and Marbella.

A five-star house in a city center has little daylight on the lower floors and a great deal on the upper ones. That means a separate lighting decision for every room category. The set covers rooms, suites and the public areas.

The lobby lounge is the opposite case to a guest room: no daylight at all, but a dozen table lamps. Both have to end up looking like the same house — that is where the work is.

For a house I photograph architecture and exteriors, interiors, the staff at work, and the surroundings that come with the booking. Which of those is needed depends on the channel: a website, a booking portal and the press all crop differently. On larger productions I bring in freelance colleagues; smaller sets I shoot alone. The work happens where the house stands — in the Rhine-Main region as much as on the road.

Hotels That Tell Stories

I have photographed new houses and long-established ones. The older ones are the harder job: rooms that grew over decades rarely have a consistent lighting plan, but they have material and patina that a new build does not. The two want to be photographed differently.

The location is part of it

Where a house stands is easy to overlook and helps decide the booking. So a hotel set includes a frame that explains the geography — without it, the interiors are handsome rooms somewhere.

An interior does not show itself. Here creativity is the patience to wait for the hour when the light falls through the room instead of against it, and the decision about what stays in the frame and what does not. A room is not recorded, it is shown.

Born in February 1990 in the USA, at home in Frankfurt am Main. Photography and film have been with me since I was fourteen, professionally since 2014 and largely for companies and hotel groups: rooms, suites, lounges, bars, spa and restaurant.
