A gym is booked on atmosphere and community rather than on a list of machines, so the film shows people using the place instead of dumbbells on a rack.
A group walking towards an entrance together is a constructed shot that does not look like one. It works because everyone moves in the same direction and nobody looks at the camera — the moment somebody poses it tips into advertising.
Telling a gym through community has a practical reason: equipment ages and looks the same everywhere. People training together are the only thing that tells one gym from another.
Photographically a training room is difficult all the same. Ceiling light draws hard shadows into faces, mirrored walls show the camera, and machines are black — so the work happens close, with light from the front, and against the mirrors rather than into them.
