A Christmas trailer for the long-established Frankfurt store Lorey, founded in 1796. The scene is a dressed salon: a fireplace, a decorated tree, a wall of books, strings of lights — and in the middle of it Father Christmas with a product from the range in his hands. A seasonal retail film has to show the range without turning into a catalog; here a figure nobody needs explained does that job.
In retail a dressed drawing room is the most honest form of product placement. Fireplace, tree, bookshelves and string lights are the context the goods will later stand in — and an object in a home sells differently than the same one on a shelf.
Father Christmas is a figure with a narrow limit. Too much of him and the film is slapstick, too little and the scene stays decoration; he holds a product rather than making a speech, and that is the whole appearance.
String lights are the reason scenes like this are filmed in the evening. They need a dark room to read as points, and they give the picture the warmth a sales floor never has in daylight.
