Campaign production for the 2021 German federal election for the SPD in the Bergstraße district. The image is an aerial at sunset: the castle above the town, the Rhine plain to the horizon behind it, and across it the line "Our Bergstraße stands together". Political communication needs pictures in several registers — a portrait for the poster, encounters for the channels, and a landscape that means the constituency rather than the party.
An aerial at sunset with a castle above the town is read as a picture of home. It says nothing about politics and everything about the point of reference — and it is the surface on which a line like “our region stands together” works at all.
Campaign material needs several registers at once: a portrait for the poster, a picture of the place for identification, scenes in conversation for credibility. Whatever is missing cannot be made up in six weeks.
And every one of those pictures gets cropped. A poster is upright, a post is square, a banner is a strip — shoot without margin and you deliver material that does not fit at the printer.
