The film of the 2021 Women’s International Trophy — "Wines, Beers & Spirits Tasted by Women". The title sits over a judge at the tasting table, half hidden by the beach flag carrying the competition’s logo, rows of dark bottles all around. The competition is tasted and judged entirely by women, and that is precisely the statement the film has to carry: it shows the jury at work rather than at the reception.
The beach flag in the foreground covers part of the scene, and that is deliberate. A title frame may be layered: the mark in front, the action behind — which gives depth to a room that consists of tables and rows of bottles.
Rows of dark bottles are difficult to photograph. Glass returns every source as a point, dark glass swallows the rest, and labels rarely stand so that all of them are legible. So one label gets the focus and the rest is taken as texture.
The statement of the competition comes without commentary. When women sit at every table and nobody else does, the film does not have to claim it — it only has to look wide enough for it to be seen.
