Día de los Muertos for Patrón Tequila. The key frame is staged like a portrait and works like a product shot: a Catrina with white hair, skull make-up and a crown of orange flowers holds the bottle into a narrow light while everything else falls away into black. A brand film in a nightlife setting has to keep the brand visible without the frame reading as an advert, and that is decided by the crop and the timing.

Narrow light on black is the oldest trick in product photography and here the condition of the evening. A party is untidy; a raking light on a face and a bottle cuts away everything that does not belong to the brand, without a set having to be built.

A flower crown and skull make-up are subjects with rules of their own. They are the mark of a holiday and not a costume; photographing them means showing people representing something rather than people in fancy dress.

So pictures like this are made with the guests rather than over their heads. A portrait somebody stands still for looks different from a frame taken in passing — and in a brand context that difference is exactly the point.
