The event was filmed in the garden and in daylight: a host in a gold-embroidered jacket at the microphone, guests with wine glasses in front of him, white parasols, string lights between the trees, the magazine’s mark in the corner.
A garden event has no stage and therefore no fixed place for the camera. Anyone who wants the reaction to an announcement in the frame stands among the guests — from the back row you film backs, and afterwards the announcement is something you can only hear.
The light comes through leaves and is dappled accordingly. Expose for the faces and let the rest run bright. That is what a summer evening outdoors looks like, and a film that evens it out looks like an indoor hall.
