The event film for the 2024 Summer Lounge, made for the Frankfurt society magazine THE FRANKFURTER. The title sits over two bottles of Veuve Clicquot on a white plinth in front of an orange fringe curtain — partner and occasion in one shot before the film has started. An aftermovie has to tell the evening so the guests recognize it and everyone who was not invited wants to be there next year.
The set is built and it ends after two meters: white plinths, the fringe curtain as a back wall, striped parasols over cobbles in front of it and the façade of an old building behind. An outdoor event space is always these two things — the designed section that is meant to look exactly like this, and the square around it that nobody controls.
That is why the title sits where the design already holds. Type over an arbitrary scene reads as something added afterwards; type over a set that was built for pictures in the first place belongs to the picture.
The second half of an evening like this looks nothing like the first. A summer event starts in daylight and ends in artificial light, and a cut that mixes the two reads as assembled. Chronology is therefore the simplest order for an aftermovie — and it is the order in which the guests remember the evening.
