THE FRANKFURTER’s 2021 Summer Garden. The shot is made from behind: a guest in a suit walking through the party with a partner’s gift bag, festoon lights, parasols and clusters of people under the trees ahead of him. A garden party has no center — the report is made on the move, and a back in the foreground is often the more honest viewpoint than a pose.
A back in the foreground is a decision against posing. Following a guest rather than stopping him gets you the walk through the party — string lights, parasols, groups on the grass — and not the second in which someone holds still for the camera.
The partner’s gift bag in the frame is no accident. At a sponsored party the bag is the proof that the brand took place, and it can be built into a reportage without anyone having to hold a product up.
A garden party has no center and therefore no place to wait in. The reportage happens on the move: once across, then back, and again and again to the places where groups form by themselves.
