The #beatsinthebackyard series at Chinaski. The title frame is the venue’s pink neon sign under the canopy, lit warm, with the blue of the falling night already beside it. A yard party starts in daylight and ends in the dark, and the series needs material from both halves because it is promoted all summer.
Neon lettering is a subject with exactly one right moment. By day it is an object on a wall, by night a patch without surroundings — it is legible together with the space around it only in the half hour when sky and sign are equally bright.
A series like this also needs pictures that do not look like one particular night. What is advertised all summer must not be datable: no years in the frame, no posters with dates, no guests in winter coats.
And a backyard is a tight room acoustically and photographically. There is no distance from which the whole could be shown — so the work goes through details: glasses, hands, string lights, the sign, and the faces in between.
