The opening of the Gibson Beach Club on the Main. Plus a unicycling juggler in front of a bank façade and Moët in an ice bucket.
An open-air venue is used for the first time on its opening night, and that switch from finished to full is the subject. So the set is shot in two lights. By day: the sign against blue sky and towers, the containers, the bar, the seating still empty. After dark: the same surfaces with festoon lights, teardrop lamps and guests in front of them. For the operator both halves matter equally — the daylight frames carry the whole summer, the night frames carry the week after the opening.
The detail frames are made in the twenty minutes before the doors open, and they can only be made once. The straw hat on the wooden swing, the stocked shelves in the container, the bottles lined up behind the bar — the moment the first guests arrive, none of it is in place again. Start at ten and you come away with a party, not a venue.
Neon against a bright sky is the hardest frame of the day. The sign glows, but the sky behind it is brighter. Expose for the sky and the pink becomes a pale line; expose for the neon and the sky goes white. The answer is the standpoint: low, into the sunlit side, with the beam as a dark surface beneath, so the pink has something to sit against.
At night the venue's own light becomes the subject rather than the problem. The teardrop lamps and the festoon strings stay untouched — flash is used on people at most, never against the lighting that makes the place a beach club in the first place.
