On stage something is handed over in front of the meter-high illuminated letters, the light violet throughout, the next speaker waiting behind. Colored stage light at that intensity is the hardest condition there is for skin tone and hair color — and for this brand those are precisely the subject.
Illuminated letters several meters high are brighter than any face in front of them. Expose for the type and you get silhouettes; expose for the people and the type is gone — and because both are needed, there are two shots rather than one.
Violet stage light is the hardest case for skin tone, because it lifts the reds in a face and takes the modelling out of the cheeks. For a brand that lives on hair and skin color that is more than a technical problem.
So at a format like this the work happens beside the stage. In the foyer, at the stands and in the breaks there is neutral light, and that is where the frames come from that show products and people in their own color.
