A trailer for the five-star Calista Luxury Resort in Belek, Turkey. In frame, a couple at the poolside — she in a wide-brimmed hat, he pointing at something out of shot — with loungers, parasols and turquoise water behind them. A resort film has to build a route through the beach, the pools, the restaurants and the suites rather than filming a catalog, and the people in the frame are what joins the stops together.
In a resort film a couple at the poolside is not a scene but a scale. Without people every resort looks the same size; with them it becomes visible how long the pool is and how far apart the loungers stand.
The pointing hand is the oldest trick in travel advertising and still the best: it leads the eye out of the frame and promises that there is something more. A trailer that shows everything has nothing left after two minutes.
Building a route also means putting the hours in order. Beach in the morning, pools at midday, restaurants in the evening, suites in the last light — mix them and you shoot a catalog; order them and you shoot a day.
