A craft film about the Saint-Louis crystal works in France. The strongest frame is also the hardest: the glowing gather on the blowpipe, right in front of the furnace mouth that all the light comes from. Between the incandescent core and the dark hall lie several stops — you expose for the glass, everything else stays silhouette, and that is precisely what makes the shot.
A furnace mouth is the hardest light a workshop has and at the same time the only one. It stays where it is, it is a point source, and it falls off to nothing within two meters — anyone who wants the craftsman visible has to put him inside those two meters.
Glowing glass also brings its own color. It burns orange no matter how you balance, and that is exactly what makes the frame readable: everything warm in it is hot, everything cool is not.
A film about craft finally needs the result. Without the finished piece in the light the work stays a process without a purpose — and only the comparison between glowing mass and cut crystal explains what happens in that hall.
