Chinaski Food

The Chinaski day bar in Frankfurt changes through the day, offering guests a particular breakfast in the morning, quick and healthy dishes at lunchtime, and tempting bistro food in the evening alongside first-rate drinks and wines. As a central meeting point near the Alte Oper it attracts local regulars as well as travelers passing through Frankfurt. With its distinctive charm and its commitment to quality and enjoyment it has built a loyal following while continuing to draw visitors from around the world.
This set is the daytime side of the house and the counterpart to the cocktail frames at the counter. It was photographed on pale marble: a bowl with avocado, sweet potato, sprouts and beetroot hummus beside a pink lemonade with lime; a coconut dessert with a scoop of ice cream in a blue dish, a cracked coconut and an iced coffee behind it.
The marble is the decision everything else follows from. It is pale, cool and lightly veined, throws light back from below and needs no extra fill. Dishes that bring their own color work on that surface — and the daytime dishes do exactly that: avocado green, hummus red, sweet potato orange against white.
The ingredients beside the plate are not decoration, they are the ingredient list. Halved beetroot, broccoli, a cut avocado, coconut shavings — they say without text what the dish is made of, and they give the picture a second layer behind the bowl. The one requirement is that whatever lies beside it is genuinely in it.
The drink stands top right in every one of these frames, slightly soft. It is the color accent and the height at once: a bowl on its own is flat, and a glass beside it gives the picture a vertical so that not everything sits on one plane.
The work is done with soft light from the side and a bounce opposite. Bowls are deep, and without that bounce half the ingredients sink into the shadow of their own rim.
