An interior set for the Flamingo Restaurant, where the furnishing is itself the subject: palm-leaf wallpaper, white pallet furniture with hot pink cushions, yellow wire chairs, pink lacquered tables, flamingo figures between the place settings, rattan pendants in a row, a beach mural and a neon “All you need is love” on a wall of artificial hedge. Plus the terrace with parasols, timber decking and artificial planting facing the street.
A place built for photographs still has to be photographable — and the job is to make calm pictures out of a lot of loud parts. Pink, turquoise, yellow and green are all in the room at once, and every one of those colors wants the lead. Put them all in one frame and the eye has nowhere to stop.
The way out is the crop. Each frame is assigned one color to lead, and the rest has to step back: indoors it is the pink cushions drawing a line through the picture, while the wallpaper and rattan pendants stay a pattern in the background. On the terrace the yellow chairs lead, and the pink is reduced to a stripe on the bench behind.
The second way out is depth. An out-of-focus plant is deliberately placed in the foreground with the actual subject behind it. That takes the hardness out of the set and turns a collection of props into a place where people sit.
And the artificial plants stay artificial. There is no point lighting them like real ones — in raking light the plastic sheen shows immediately. So the light comes from the front and stays soft, and the planting does what it is there for: green surfaces that divide the space and hide the street behind it.
