The aftermovie of THE FRANKFURTER’s 2022 Summer Garden. In frame, a singer in a green sequinned jacket at the microphone, guests in hats beside him in the afternoon light under the parasols. An aftermovie has to tell the evening in under two minutes so the guests recognize it and everyone who was not invited wants to be there next year.
Afternoon light under parasols is soft and colored at once: it comes down through white fabric and back up from bright ground, and it tints everyone standing beneath it in the color of the parasol.
A singer in a sequined jacket is the most rewarding subject a garden event has. The surface throws back every light as a point, it moves with him, and it turns an announcement into a picture.
Two minutes is a hard limit for an aftermovie. It forces the selection: arrival, program, a conversation, applause, the end — anything beyond that is watched by nobody who was not there.
