A production for St. Kilian Distillers, a German whisky distillery. Filmed in the warehouse: rows of stacked casks with their numbers burned into the heads, a single table of glasses lit in the middle, and otherwise near-darkness. A warehouse is a lighting problem — there is no daylight, every light has to be brought in, and the cask ends are the only structure the frame can hang on.
A cask warehouse is a room without windows, and that is its quality. Every source in the frame is placed, every row loses itself in the dark, and the table in the spot is the only place where something happens — no more direction is needed.
The numbers burned into the heads are the detail that explains the work. They say that things are counted, dated and waited for here, and in a frame of nothing but round forms they give you the one straight line.
Wood and whisky ask for the same color decision. Both are warm, both live on amber — balance to neutral and you get a gray warehouse and a pale glass, and the client recognizes neither.
