A Realogis company event on a Frankfurt rooftop, begun in the afternoon and run into the night. From that height the Eschenheimer Turm with its pointed turrets stands directly in front of the skyline — conversations at standing tables, parasols, a speaker with a microphone by the window wall, laid tables with blue banquettes and cut glass, a bronze sculpture on the sill.
At the center of the set are two frames of the same view. In one the tower sits in afternoon light under a blue sky with cloud, traffic crossing the junction below. In the other the same crop is deep blue, the towers are lit and the road is drawing light trails. Getting that pair is no feat — you only have to stay, and to remember. But it is what a venue needs most often afterwards, and it is missing from most event sets.
On a roof in the afternoon there is no shade anywhere. You can put the guests against the sun and accept the rim around hair and shoulders, or you can have them look into it and collect pictures of people squinting. This set takes the first option: backlight, open faces, a bright edge along the collar. That half the guests are wearing sunglasses is not a fault to be argued away — it is what the day looked like.
The same sun governs the interior frames. The bronze on the windowsill is deliberately photographed against the glass with the flare left in: at that hour it is the only honest way to show a detail in that room, and the patch of light dates the picture to the same hour as the terrace frames.
The tower is more than scenery here. A skyline of glass could be in a dozen cities; the Eschenheimer Turm in front of it says without a caption where this company spent the evening.
