A choreography film for the Weiss dance school, shot in the school’s own studio: a group in black on the parquet, caught mid-lunge in unison, the school’s lettering on the blue wall and the mirrors behind them. Filming dance means making the camera the second dancer — the camera move and the choreography need the same tempo, or they work against each other.

In a dance hall a mirrored wall is the hardest surface there is. It shows the camera, it doubles the group, and it throws every light back — so you work at an angle to it, or you make it the subject.

Making the camera the second dancer means in practice: it moves in the same direction as the group and to the same beat. A move against the choreography looks wrong even when it is technically clean.

And being in sync decides the take. A lunge two out of eight place too early is a mistake in a still and a disturbance in a film — so the same passage runs several times and the edit looks for the clean one.
