A hip hop DJ not only selects music and uses multiple turntables to play the music to support one or more MC / rappers, but also performs turntable scratching to create percussive sounds. Usually they are also songwriters and / or record producers who use turntable music and sampling to create auxiliary instruments for new tracks.
The studio portrait is reduced to two things: a hood and a piece of lettering. The head sits deep inside the hood of an olive-gray sweatshirt, the eyes are behind dark glasses, and only the nose, mouth and chin are visible. The shirt beneath reads CREW LOVE, and the same appears on the chest of the jacket as a crest with crossed baseball bats.
The light comes from above and slightly to the side, or there would be nothing under the hood at all. That is the whole problem with a portrait like this: a hood is a cast shadow with fabric around it, and the only way to show a face inside one is a light flat enough to reach under the rim — without blowing out the shoulder above it.
