Studio portraits in a very tight register: almost monochrome in cool blue-gray, a dark lip, the hair running away into shadow, the light narrow and frontal. Plus a warmer version with a magenta rim from the right. Low-key portraits live on the edge light — separating dark hair from a dark background takes a second light whose only job is that separation.
A low-key portrait stands or falls on separation. Dark hair against a dark ground disappears unless an edge comes in; that edge is not an effect but the condition under which the form is visible at all.
Blue-gray as the base tone is a decision against skin. Cool light takes the warmth out of a face, and the dark lip catches it again — without it the frame would be empty of color.
The warmer version with a magenta edge light is the proof of how far a single lamp carries. Same setup, same person, one gel more — and a severe portrait turns into a different genre.
