A studio portrait against strong magenta. The background is not incidental here but half the idea: it is lit separately so the color stands clean and does not bounce onto the skin, while the face gets its own soft light from the front. Add a high white collar over a black top — graphic rather than decorative.
A colored background is lit in its own right, or it is not a background. Without its own light magenta is a dark surface; with too much it tints hair and shoulders — the craft is finding the distance between person and wall at which both are right.
The high white collar is not styling but a tool. It separates the face from the color, it lifts the chin from below, and it gives the frame its only neutral surface against which the white balance can be checked.
And a studio portrait against a strong color has a short half-life when the color is a fashion. So the same session almost always produces a version against gray — same person, same light, a background that will still work in five years.
