A portrait series with one subject in four places and four lighting situations: at night beside a car with its headlights as the only source, then a quiet available-light profile in a white tee against soft greenery, next on the grating of a rusted industrial structure, and finally a black and white frame under a steel span. Four visual worlds from one session — which is the point of a series like this.
Four locations in one session are a question of order rather than of stamina. Available light first, while the sun is up; the industrial site when the light goes flat; the frame with headlights last, because it does not work without darkness.
Car headlights as the only source are hard, directional and low — exactly the three properties that otherwise draw a face unflatteringly. What makes them usable is the angle: from the side rather than the front, with the model turning into the light.
A steel grating is the opposite. It draws a pattern onto everything standing on it, and it demands shoes you can stand securely in — in places like that the model’s footwear decides how many poses are possible.
