The Day of the Dead is usually one of the most important celebrations for the dead in Mexico, in Díade Muertos (also Díade los Muertos) in Spain. The preparation time for the celebration begins in mid-October. The celebration takes place from the eve of "All Saints' Day" (October 31) to the "Day of All Souls" on November 2. The way in which the Day of the Dead is celebrated varies from region to region.
What was filmed is the group’s entrance: three figures in calavera make-up coming down a narrow staircase, the one in front in a bowler hat and a striped poncho, the house’s neon sign and a single bulb above them.
The low angle is the decision this shot rests on. From below a staircase reads as an entrance, the figures grow larger than the room, and the bulb hangs above them like a spotlight nobody rigged.
A single bulb is also all the light there is. It is warm, it falls off fast, and it draws exactly the faces in the foreground — the rest of the staircase may stay dark, because nothing happens there.
