A photo shoot at the lake: portraits in the reeds by the water, shot in the hour before sunset. The stems stand against the light and break up into points of gold, the model in front of them in a denim shirt, half turned away, hair in curls. At the end, one frame in a red dress against the water. A reed bed is a rewarding and difficult background at once: it scatters the light beautifully and hides anything below waist height.
Reeds against the light are a foreground you cannot build. The stalks stand close enough to break the light into points and far enough apart for a face behind them still to be visible — both at once happens only in a few places along a bank.
So the position is found by the light rather than by the subject. The sun has to be low enough to come through the stalks, and the model has to be where it comes through — which in case of doubt means walking thirty meters further.
The frame in the red dress at the end is the counter-move. No foreground, no scatter, only a figure against water: after a series built on soft focus a set needs one picture that is clear, or it looks like a single effect.
