"8 Days of Christmas" — a Christmas production by the Weiss dance school with choreography by Isabella Rosastro. Filmed in the school’s own studio, dressed as a set for the piece: beanbags, a wall of windows, a dancer in a red Christmas dress and a second costumed figure behind her. A series of eight instalments needs a setting that survives eight times, which is why the dressing comes before the choreography.

Turning a practice hall into a set is the cheapest production there is and the most demanding preparation. Beanbags, light and a few props are enough — provided everything else a dance hall contains has been cleared out of the frame first.

The window wall is the light source and the limit at once. It gives soft light from one side and blows out the moment the sun stands outside — which is why Christmas productions are shot on cloudy days or after dusk.

Red against gray is finally the contrast the piece rests on. A Christmas dress is not a costume but the only color value in the frame, and everything else in the room is toned down towards it.
