Reportage at Nadia’s music school, made during actual lessons. The rooms are painted in color and full of instruments: a blue wall with six guitars on stands over a rainbow rug, a yellow room with three keyboards in a row. And the lessons themselves — a teacher and a boy with classical guitars at the music stand, a girl on the violin, a piano lesson for two. Teaching cannot be restaged without looking staged; you work quietly and wait until the camera has become uninteresting.
In a reportage colored walls are a gift: they organize the rooms, they separate the subjects, and they turn a row of instruments into a picture. What they cost is color accuracy — a blue wall tints every face in front of it.
So the balance is set again in every room. Yellow, blue and a rainbow rug in one frame are an instruction to the camera; set it once and walk through and you end up with three different skin tones.
Photographing during lessons also means being quiet. A lesson is a lesson, a child does not practice the same passage twice for the camera, and the usable frame happens where nobody stops playing.
