Deutsche Tafel is a non-profit organization in Germany dedicated to fighting food waste and supporting people in need. It collects surplus, high-quality food from producers and traders and distributes it to social institutions and directly to those in need. With over 950 food banks nationwide, the organization reaches a large number of people who rely on food donations. Deutsche Tafel relies heavily on volunteer work and is committed to social justice and sustainability. Through her work, she makes a significant contribution to reducing poverty and food waste in Germany.
The story is told through the people who work there: a supervisor of the food distribution in a white coat and an orange apron, the crates, the shelves and the display of fruit and vegetables behind her. Her name and her role stand in the lower third.
A documentary about a social institution is decided by the question of whom it shows. People collecting food are not put on display; people handing it out can describe how the work runs — and together that makes a picture without exposure.
The hall itself is fluorescent light, gray walls and plastic crates. The color comes from the crates and the aprons, and the camera uses it: orange against dark green is the only contrast this room offers by itself.
