A film for ANDIEBAR, a private gin lounge. The title frame is the illuminated counter with its engraved lettering, the bottle shelf backlit in turquoise behind it. A bar is a dark room with a great many small light sources — exactly the situation in which automatic settings give up and every corner has to be judged on its own.
Lettering engraved into a counter is not a frame you improvise. The engraving is shallow, it lives on raking light, and it disappears as soon as the camera moves a step sideways — here the angle decides, not the exposure.
The backlit bottle shelf is the opposite: a surface that lights itself and leaves everything in front of it a silhouette. Holding both in one frame means finding a middle path between two brightnesses that no automatic setting finds.
A private lounge is also photographed as a room rather than as a business. There are no guests, no menu, no price list — what remains is material, light and the order the glasses stand in.
