An animal is the least predictable cast a shoot can have. It knows no timing and no second take, and the camera has to go where it stands rather than the other way round. Shoots like this produce considerably more material than planned.
The place sets the remaining limits: a farmyard is tight, dusty and loud, the light is whatever the hour gives, and consideration for the animals comes before any idea for a picture. That is exactly why the result does not look like a commercial.
