A website trailer for Mainglanz, filmed inside the workshop: sports cars on a blue-and-gray checkerboard floor under a honeycomb grid of LED tubes that the paintwork throws back in long white lines. Those reflections are the subject in a car film — they are what shows how smooth a surface is, and they forgive no untidy camera move. The film runs on the company’s own home page and has a few seconds to carry all of it.
For a car film a honeycomb grid of LED tubes is both a tool and a constraint. It draws the same row of white stripes on every wing, and those stripes are what makes a camera move visible at all — you read from them whether the movement was steady.
Paint is also the most honest test of cleanliness. A water spot, a scratch, a speck of dust appear three times as clearly in a reflection as on the surface itself; a car shoot therefore begins with cleaning rather than with rigging.
A trailer for a home page finally has a hard limit: it runs without sound, it runs in a loop, and it has to be recognizable within two seconds. Whatever is not there by then is not there at all.
