The Grandhotel Hessischer Hof (Frankfurt luxury five-star hotel) is the city's only privately managed luxury hotel, owned by Landgrave and the Prince of Hesse Family Foundation. One frame in the set is a tea buffet, and it is a good example of detail being the work in a grand hotel. A silver samovar on the table, white pots on warmers, a phalanx of small silver jugs, and behind them a tier of a dozen labelled caddies — English Breakfast, Vanilla Rooibos, Red Fruit, Morning Star, Dong Ti Oolong — with orchids, stacked saucers and folded napkins.
Silver beside white in front of a window wall is the problem to solve: the metal reflects everything in the room, the camera included, and the porcelain loses its modelling the moment you expose for the silver. Outside stand bare plane trees — winter light, soft and from one side.
