Hilton Berlin – hotel photography

Interior and room photography at the Hilton Berlin. Hotel photography: Gendarmenmarkt Berlin. A room and a suite at the Hilton Berlin on Gendarmenmarkt.

A room and a suite at the Hilton Berlin on Gendarmenmarkt. What was photographed: a double room with a balcony door onto the city, warm bedside light and a patterned carpet, and a maisonette suite with a curving staircase, a teal sofa and an abstract canvas on the wall. Rooms on the square side have one of the best-known views in the city — which makes every frame an exposure decision between the interior and the window.

The room picture is built around the balcony door: the window with its view over the roofs on the left, the bed against a gold-brown shimmering wall on the right, an armchair, a small table and a carpet with a wave pattern between them.

In this house the view is the selling point and the problem in the frame. In daylight inside and outside lie several stops apart, and a window with nothing but white in it turns the location into a hole in the wall.

So the room lamps stay on. They lift the interior far enough to close the gap to the window, and they give the picture the warm color a hotel room has in the evening — the same frame in pure daylight would look like a furniture catalog.
