A hotel set for the AMERON Berlin ABION Spreebogen. What was photographed is not only the house but the work inside it: a receptionist walking a guest through check-in, the chef filleting a fish on a green board, a steak and corn on the grill behind a row of herb pots, a hand plating the starters. Showing a hotel through its people is the second half of hotel photography — the first is the rooms, the second is the evidence that somebody works there.
The frame at the reception desk is staged and does not look it, and that is the whole difference. Two people, a map on the counter, a pen in hand, both looking down rather than at the camera; a second guest out of focus behind them.
Pictures like this need staff who play along and an action they already know how to do. Ask someone to smile and you get a pose; ask them to show a guest the way on a map and you get a scene.
It is photographed wide open, into the depth of the lobby. The soft foreground and background are what turn a counter into a place — sharp from front to back the same scene would look like operational documentation.
