Beside the rooms it is the ballroom that carries the set: a stucco ceiling and two large chandeliers, violet wall panels between white pilasters, rows of covered chairs and a white grand piano on herringbone parquet.
A room set with chairs is a picture about order. The rows have to line up, the piano is the one object standing across them, and the camera stands in the middle — in a symmetrical room every deviation shows at once, and then nobody thinks about the event any more, only about the mistake.
The warm light of the chandeliers and the cool light from the windows meet in the same room. Pulling both to neutral at once is not possible; you decide for the chandeliers, because they are what the hall actually offers in the evening.
