Alvarez & Marsal – Senckenberg Museum Frankfurt
Event photography for Alvarez & Marsal at the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt: a dinner in the museum. The frame from the atrium shows the conditions…
A corporate event for Alvarez & Marsal at the Senckenberg Natural History Museum in Frankfurt. The hall is washed in violet and blue for the evening, the ceiling dome glowing in color — and above it all the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus reaches into the room. A dinner among museum exhibits is a rewarding and difficult subject at once: the display lighting is directional and made for objects, not for people.
The frame from the atrium shows the conditions: the tyrannosaur lit red, the arcades behind it in violet, the domed ceiling in turquoise. Three colors in one room, and not one of them can be switched off.
With event lighting like this there is no correct white balance, only a decision. Want the guests to look natural and the color of the evening is gone; keep the color and faces have to be photographed wherever neutral light is left.
So a dinner in a museum is thought of in two passes: the exhibits with their own lighting as the stage, and the people wherever table light or candles give something. Asking for both in one frame is the mistake.
