The Frankfurt cultural association MainSlam e. V. Poetry Grand Slam in the Rhine-Main region and beyond. Four times a year, local celebrities are invited to take part in his competitions in the “Best Poetry Grand Slam” series in Bornheim. The Poetry Grand Slam is a literary stage competition that began in Chicago in the mid-1980s. It offers all interested parties the opportunity to show their text to the audience. This will, with the help of the evaluation committee and the applause, evaluate these words in several rounds, whether they are boring, lyrical, funny or serious, and determine last night’s winner.
The frame from the square sets the scene: the floodlit façade of the Alte Oper at blue hour, people waiting to be let in, café parasols at the edges. For a cultural event the building itself is the first picture.
Blue hour is the only usable time for it. Before it the sky is too bright and the façade lighting does nothing; after it the sky is black and the building stands in a hole — in between lie the twenty minutes where both are the same brightness.
Inside everything reverses. A stage competition plays in shifting spotlights in front of a dark hall, and the audience that decides the evening sits in that dark. Both belong in the set, and both need a different exposure than the façade outside.
