A commercial for X Vodka in Austria. The shot sits inside a car: two guests in conversation, a string of lights behind them, everything in warm half-darkness. A spirits film must not put the product at the center and still has to keep it present in every scene, which is a question of staging rather than shot size.
A car interior is the tightest location a brand film can have and the most intimate. Two people, one light source behind the glass, no room for a tripod — what works here works because the tightness is part of the subject.
Keeping the brand in frame without putting it at the center is both a legal and an aesthetic question for spirits. A bottle in every scene reads as advertising; no bottle reads as a short film — the answer lies in how it is cropped.
Warm half-darkness is the handwriting of the genre. It forgives little: too dark and it is noise, too bright and it looks like a kitchen. The narrow band between them is the whole job.
