The official film of the Honda European Skills Contest on 14 October 2022 at the Honda Academy in Germany. The closing frame is the group photograph under the banner: some eighty competitors from across Europe in workshop dress, every arm in the air. A competition film has to build tension with nothing spectacular to film — the drama comes from concentration, time pressure and the scoring.
The group photograph at the end is the part every participant takes home. Eighty people in workwear in front of a banner need an arrangement that exists in advance and one instruction everyone can hear — both are organization rather than photography.
The contest itself happens at workstations, and workstations are tight. Between a lift, a tool trolley and a test unit there is rarely a position that shows both the hand and the face — usually you choose the hand.
Tension in a film like this comes from what everyone knows: limited time, an examiner’s look, the wait for the score. A competition in which nothing explodes is told through faces or not at all.
