A double anniversary for Chinaski in Frankfurt — nine years of the club, five of the day bar. In front of the photo wall reading "9&5 Years" stands a show dancer in silver feathers, the courtyard and its guests behind her in evening light. A club anniversary is a night where the regulars are the subject, and the pictures belong to the house and its guests alike. An event trailer of the evening was produced.
On a night like this a backdrop with the anniversary lettering is the one reliable constant. It stands still, it is lit, and across the whole night it delivers frames that can later be attributed without doubt.
The rest is movement in half-light. A club evening starts in the yard on the last daylight and ends inside under spots; in between the brightness moves by several stops, and the camera is adjusted continuously rather than set once.
With a venue photographing its own regulars there is also a rule that costs nothing technically: whoever does not want to be photographed is not photographed. An anniversary film that exposes the regulars loses exactly the audience it is made for.
