An evening event by Radio Frankfurt on the Dominican Republic, held on a rooftop high above the city. The skyline stands behind every frame from the blue hour into the night, the station's logo is on the glass balustrade, and there are orange cocktails and sparkling wine in the guests' hands. Alongside them the tourist board's stand with its pavilion backdrop and a tray of filled banana leaves from the buffet.
A rooftop gives you about forty minutes in which the city and the faces can both be exposed. Two frames of the same corner show what that means: in one the sky is still bright enough for the towers to read as a solid silhouette and the faces are lit by nothing but the remaining daylight; in the other the skyline has become a string of points and the guests are on flash. Same spot, same evening — the difference is the clock.
That sets the order in which an evening like this gets photographed. Anything that needs the city behind it — group shots, the welcome, the circles at the railing — goes first. The stand, the buffet, the detail frames and everything under a roof come afterwards, because an interior can be lit and a sunset cannot.
The frame of the balustrade is the only one in which the station's name and the reason for choosing this venue sit together: the logo sharp on the glass, the lit city behind it dissolved into circles. Pictures like that do not happen in passing, they are looked for — they are what survives an event and what every recap afterwards asks for.
And one small thing that is the same on every roof terrace: guests stand with their backs to the view. Photographing groups means turning them round — politely, but every time, because the view is the reason the venue was booked.
