Other hues besides gray, such as sepia, cyan, or brown can also be used in monochrome photography.
In the contemporary world, monochrome photography is mostly used for artistic purposes and certain technical imaging applications, rather than for visually accurate reproduction of scenes.
One frame shows the Niederwald monument above Rüdesheim: Germania with the raised crown on her plinth, the relief beneath her, the winged figures either side, and in front the rubble-stone wall of the terrace with its iron railing and the flights of steps leading up.
The sky is the real subject here. Above the figure, contrails run in several directions through thin veils of cloud, and in black and white they become lines that all converge on her. In color the same sky would be pale blue and incidental; only the conversion to gray values turns the weather into a composition. Taken in winter, as the bare trees show.
