Some frames can be repeated and built up carefully. Others exist for a few minutes, sometimes only for a few seconds.
Blue hour and melting ice
Blue hour at the Franziska was a brief balance between the skyline outside and the light inside. In food work a plated dish changes fast: ice melts, sauces spread and herbs lose their shape.
The winter menu at the Druckwasserwerk was exactly that kind of job. Every course came out of the kitchen and held its shape for a couple of minutes.
Moments that do not come back
At an event the arrival, the handing over of a prize or a spontaneous reaction cannot be repeated. A group photograph has a narrow window too: once a lot of people have to be available at the same time, a prepared position matters more than an elaborate lighting rig.
Preparation instead of reaction
Situations like these shaped the way I work. Camera settings, perspective and sequence are settled before the decisive moment. That leaves the attention free for whatever cannot be planned.
