The rooftop bar Franziska in the Henninger Turm in Frankfurt, photographed at blue hour. The curved counter follows the radius of the tower, with the city behind it out to the horizon; bottles stand in a row on the bar, a lit ice channel and brass battery lamps beside them, petrol-colored cushions in the niche along the glazing, and above it all a ceiling of thousands of small points.
Inside and outside are several stops apart here, and the view is the selling point — so every frame is an exposure decision between the bar and the skyline. The window for it is short: roughly twenty minutes in which the sky and the light inside are equally bright. Before that the glazing is a glowing wall with nothing legible behind it. After it the same panes are black mirrors throwing the bar back at you.
The curve is the real subject. The counter follows the tower, so the camera stands at the start of the bend, letting it run into the depth with the window bays stacking up. Shot from the middle it would be a straight counter in a room with a view, and what makes this place particular would be gone.
Curved glass doubles every light source. On a rooftop floor in the evening everything appears twice: the lamps, the ice channel, the ceiling points. Since none of that can be changed, the standpoint is chosen so the reflections fall into the dark zones of the room rather than across the skyline.
The only movable light is the small light. The battery lamps and the lit channel are the sources that can actually be placed — and they are placed to pull the eye along the counter towards the back, to where the city begins.
