Exterior photography of properties across the Rhine-Main region, spanning the building periods: a new build in ochre render with a garage ramp and a roof terrace, a white town house with a row of balconies behind a clipped hedge and iron railings, a gray-and-orange apartment block on an arterial road, a cubic villa with glass balustrades behind a beech hedge at head height, and the sandstone bay of a period villa in deep evening light.
In exteriors the hour matters more than the equipment. The bay is photographed with the sun low, raking across the ornament from the side so that every cornice throws its own shadow; at midday the same façade would be one evenly bright surface with no depth in it. The plain new build needs the opposite — not modelling but a sky: the cloud above its roofline is the only part of that picture which is not a right angle.
The real work, though, is finding the one standpoint where the building is complete and the street is not. Every one of these houses has lamp posts, road signs, bins, utility boxes and parked cars in front of it. You cannot move them; you can only step sideways until the mast disappears behind the hedge and the no-parking sign is no longer standing in the façade. That takes most of the time on site and none of it shows in the finished frame.
Then there is the rule that applies to every building: vertical edges have to stay vertical. A tilted camera turns a four-story block into a tower falling away backwards, and buyers notice that before they can name it.
And one decision every property series has to make: overview or detail. The wide view answers what the house is and where it stands. The close view of the bay and the balcony ironwork answers why someone would want this house in particular. Together they are a series; either one alone is a listing photo.
