A dish series for Cucina Mediterraneo, shot on a pale linen cloth that stays the same across the whole set. The menu was worked through: spaghetti alle vongole, a plate of grilled prawns, two versions of carpaccio, penne all'arrabbiata, a lamb cutlet, a porcini pizza — plus a dessert setting with cappuccino. Italian cooking is sold on simplicity, and simple dishes are the hardest to photograph: little color, nothing to hide behind.
One plate from the set: a piece of salmon with grilled skin, a whole prawn in the shell beside it, a spoon of tomato concassée over the top, four grilled courgette slices with their bar marks to the left, two boiled potatoes with chopped parsley to the right. All on white porcelain with a wide rim, on gray linen.
For food photography that is an unexcited, honest arrangement — and that is exactly where the work sits. The light comes from behind at an angle so the grill marks on the courgette cast shadows and the shell of the prawn catches a highlight; lit from the front the plate would be flat. The shallow depth of field keeps the rim soft, so the eye stays where the food is.
