Interior and atmosphere photography for Amoroso by the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. The house was photographed the way a guest arrives at it: the façade with its gold lettering, the menu in its case, the long bar with its wall of bottles, and the tables laid with folded napkins. A restaurant in that position lives on its evening light — warm, directional, glass and reflection everywhere — and the set was made in exactly that rather than in imported studio light.
The frame that carries the name is the screen at the service station: “Amoroso an der Alten Oper” bright in a dark room, a wine rack behind it, ice buckets, a stack of plates and the wall lights throwing their beams up and down. A restaurant’s name is rarely written large on a wall — you find it where the work happens.
Wall lights of that kind are an instruction to the camera. They draw two bright triangles on the plaster and leave the middle dark; even that out and the room loses its face, expose for it and you get the gradation a guest actually sees in the evening.
So the order of a shoot like this follows the service: the house before opening, laid up and empty, and the atmosphere frames afterwards, once the lights have been brought down.
