Marie Schlosscafe Philippsruhe Hanau – Trailer

A trailer for the Marie Schlosscafé at Schloss Philippsruhe in Hanau. The dining room is a hall with a stucco ceiling, a chandelier and tall windows; inside it, wicker chairs at tables laid in white, a large ornamental urn between them. A café inside a baroque palace lives on the contrast between the architecture and the everyday service — the film has to show both without either overwhelming the other.

Three periods stand side by side in the room: a stucco ceiling and a gilded chandelier, a painted vase as tall as a person, a modern blue painting, and wicker chairs of the sort found in any garden café. That mixture is the business.

A hall with tall windows gives light from one side and leaves the ceiling dark. Because the ceiling is part of the subject here, the exposure goes on it and the window zone is allowed to run bright — otherwise you photograph a café and not a palace.

And the camera stays low. From the eye level of a seated guest the room reads as tall as it is; from above it turns into a floor plan with chairs on it.
